How they are related

Goldfish belong to Cyprinidae, the carp and minnow family, and were domesticated in China over roughly a thousand years from a wild carp, with ornamental varieties selected from colour mutations. Bettas belong to Osphronemidae, the gourami family, within the anabantoid group whose defining feature is the labyrinth organ. The aquarium betta is one species in a genus containing many others, several of which are not the bubble-nesting, long-finned fish people picture. The two families are not close relatives.

A note on naming: Betta is a genus of many species, and betta fish in the aquarium trade nearly always means Betta splendens. Goldfish covers dozens of selectively bred varieties of a single species, and body forms differ enough between them that size and swimming ability vary considerably.

Telling them apart

Size and outline separate them at once. A goldfish is a deep or torpedo-bodied fish that keeps growing, orange being only the most familiar of many colours, and it carries no barbels at the corners of the mouth — which is how to tell a goldfish from a young common carp. Goldfish derive from temperate East Asian fresh waters and tolerate cool conditions well; released goldfish have established damaging feral populations in temperate lakes and rivers on several continents, where they reach sizes no aquarium specimen approaches.

Both are omnivorous but weighted differently. Goldfish take plant material, algae, detritus and invertebrates, foraging more or less continuously along the bottom and sifting substrate as they go.
