How they are related
The domestic dog descends from the grey wolf and is treated either as a subspecies of it or as a closely related species depending on the authority. The domestic cat descends from the African wildcat. Both are carnivorans, but dogs are caniforms and cats feliforms — two branches that separated tens of millions of years ago, long before either was domesticated.
Telling them apart
No identification issue arises. What is worth noting is how differently the two species vary: dogs range from a couple of kilograms to more than seventy, with skull shapes so different they would be taken for separate species in the fossil record, while cat breeds differ mainly in coat, ear and face shape within a fairly narrow size range.
There is no identification question here — the useful distinction is what each animal is built for. A dog's biology reflects a cooperative pack hunter that ate what the group could get; a cat's reflects a solitary specialist on small prey. Habitat and distribution
Both live worldwide alongside people, and both have free-ranging populations. Dogs have a vastly larger olfactory epithelium and far more olfactory receptor genes than people, which underpins detection and tracking work. Cats see well in very low light through a reflective tapetum lucidum behind the retina, hear well into the ultrasonic range used by rodents, and use whiskers to judge gaps and detect air movement at close range.

Both commonly live well over a decade under good care, with substantial variation. In dogs, size is a strong predictor: small breeds typically outlive very large ones by a considerable margin.
