How they are related

The domestic dog descends from the grey wolf and is treated either as a subspecies of it or as a closely related species depending on the authority. The domestic cat descends from the African wildcat. Both are carnivorans, but dogs are caniforms and cats feliforms — two branches that separated tens of millions of years ago, long before either was domesticated.
