Dogs are canids within Carnivora, descended from wolf populations and sharing the family with foxes, jackals and dholes. A dog stands square on four limbs of comparable length, with a forward-facing skull and a mouth designed for gripping and shearing. A rabbit sits with hind limbs folded beneath a compact body, the hind feet long and the thigh muscle bulky, ears upright or lopped by breed. Rabbit eyes sit high on the skull for near all-round vision, while a dog's face forward for depth judgement.

Enlarged hind limbs folded beneath the body, eyes high on the sides of the head, ears rotating independently, and an animal that goes silent when worried: rabbit. If the animal thumps a hind foot and then freezes, it is telling you something is wrong, and that signal has no equivalent anywhere in dog body language.
Habitat and distribution
Dogs live everywhere people do, from housed pets to large free-roaming village populations. The European rabbit's natural setting is open grassland and scrub with diggable soil, where colonies excavate warrens with multiple entrances used for shelter, breeding and escape, and introduced populations in Australia and elsewhere have transformed vegetation and soil. A domestic rabbit indoors retains the full burrowing repertoire, which is why it digs at bedding and seeks enclosed spaces to retreat into.
Diet and ecological role
Dogs are carnivores with real omnivorous capacity, including starch-digesting adaptations that arose during domestication, and they take a broad range of foods. Rabbits are strict herbivores whose entire digestive and dental system depends on a near-continuous supply of long fibre; the caecum ferments plant material and produces caecotrophs that are re-ingested to recover nutrients. Foods entirely ordinary for a dog can be unsuitable for a rabbit, and feeding regimes for either belong with a veterinarian rather than a web page.
Behaviour
A dog directs attention outward — to people, to movement, to sound — and expresses arousal visibly and audibly. A rabbit's default responses are vigilance, freezing, bolting to cover and thumping a hind foot in alarm, punctuated by the twisting leaps known as binkies when relaxed. Rabbits also dig and chew persistently as normal behaviour rather than misbehaviour. The mismatch is that canine excitement is loud and legible while rabbit fear is silent, so a scene can look calm from one side and not be.
Senses and adaptations
Dogs have exceptional olfaction, hearing that extends above the human range, and dichromatic motion-biased vision well suited to detecting a moving animal. Rabbits are equipped for the opposite task: eyes placed for almost panoramic coverage, large-surfaced ears that rotate independently and also help shed heat, and a nose in near-continuous motion sampling the air. A rabbit's blind spot lies directly in front of its face, so it can lose track of something a dog would be looking straight at.

Lifespan and life stages
Both are commonly misjudged. Dog lifespan scales inversely with size, with small breeds often reaching the mid-teens and giant breeds frequently much less, and breed-linked health issues shifting the picture further. Well-housed domestic rabbits often live around eight to twelve years, considerably longer than the two or three years older pet-shop lore suggested, with breed and size influencing the range.
