How they are related

Both are corvids, but they sit in different genera. The rook is Corvus frugilegus, in the genus that also holds the crows and ravens; the jackdaw, often listed with them in older sources, is now usually placed in its own genus Coloeus. The Eurasian magpie is Pica pica, in a separate genus again. Magpie is also a much-abused name applied to species in more than one family — Australian magpies, for instance, are unrelated birds named for a superficial resemblance to the European species.

Telling them apart

Colour does almost all the work here, which is unusual for two members of this family. Nothing about a pied bird with a streaming tail can be confused with a uniformly black one. If light is poor, use structure instead: a very long graduated tail and an undulating flight belong to one, while a short square tail, fingered wingtips and direct rowing flight within a moving flock belong to the other.

Habitat and distribution

Both use mixed farmland, parkland, orchards and the edges of settlements across Europe and temperate Asia. Their requirements differ in detail. The rook needs open feeding fields near a stand of tall trees that can hold a colony, and it does poorly where those trees are absent. The magpie needs hedgerow, scrub and scattered thorny cover for its nest and adapts readily to gardens, road verges and suburban parks.

Diet and ecological role

The rook's long pointed bill is a probe, letting it extract earthworms and crane fly larvae from below the surface of pasture and stubble, supplemented with grain and seeds. The magpie feeds more from the surface, taking beetles, caterpillars, worms, fruit, scraps, carrion and, in the breeding season, some eggs and nestlings. Both cache food, and both adjust readily to what a season and a field make available.

The rook's year is organised around the colony, with nest repair beginning in late winter and a constant background of calling from occupied treetops.
