How they are related

The guppy is a single species in the livebearing family Poeciliidae, alongside mollies, platies and swordtails. Sex the fish first. A brightly patterned, small-bodied fish with a stiff rod-like anal fin is a male guppy; the plainer, larger, deeper-bodied fish beside it is a female of the same species. Tetras of both sexes usually look alike, and most carry a small fleshy adipose fin between the dorsal fin and the tail. Neon and cardinal tetras add an unmistakable horizontal blue stripe that guppies never show.

Why are male and female guppies so different when neon tetras look alike?
